Glit (Iceland)

Post by koobideh on Fri May 15, 2009 1:18 am

Have not been able to find much background info about Glit pottery, but apparently it dates from the 1960s and the earlier pieces incorporate lava rock into the glaze. Quite distinctive and easy to recognize, and those little lava bits are really sharp! (as in razor-like). Here is a decorative plate I found recently.

That is brilliant!!!!! No mucking about with glazes just bung real proper pieces of lava on it...

Have never heard of Glit before but will attempt a little research.

Most of the info I've found has come from Ebay listings ... I also bought what looks like a candle holder the other week; will post a pic soon. I have the impression that the later pieces don't have the lava glaze?

My husband just told me that he saw a Glit vase the other day but didn't buy it because it was chipped to the rim. He said that the pieces of embedded lava were so sharp he almost cut his hand on it!

this is real fat lava,no need for bright red glaze when you can have blood!
