I'm just back from Bournemouth and thought the vase in our hotel room last night may be of interest:

It was enscribed to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Carlton Hotel in 1975, from Mr & Mrs Smith. It struck me as funny - like they just signed in as Mr and Mrs Smith but were really having an affair!

Would this have been from 1975?

The pottery started in principle when Susan Williams-Ellis, daughter of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis (creator of the Portmeirion Village of 'The Prisoner' fame) and her husband Euan Cooper-Willis took over Gray's Pottery in 1960 and Kirkham's Pottery a year later – renamed and marketed as The Portmeirion Potteries Ltd in 1962. It was during this period of the 1960s that some of Susan Williams-Ellis’ most famous shapes and designs were created. Portmeirion are still in production today.

Dartington Pottery is one of the unsung heros of the 20th century British ceramics world,With pottery giants such as Janice Tchalenko,Petra Tilly and Alan White, all chosing to work at Dartington, there is little wonder that the output was stunningly good.

Dartington closed in April 2006 when it merged with Grayshott pottery.

The first piece we acquired was a meat plate that was bought for my o/h as a joke, her brother thought it was so terribly kitch that it would be funny to give it as a birthday present.

Holkham Hall in Norfolk is a Palladian style mansion, home of the Coke family and the Earls of Leicester and built between 1734 and 1764 by the first Earl of Leicester, Thomas Coke.

A pottery was established at Holkham Hall more than 50 years ago, making it the first stately home to produce pottery on-site to sell in the gift shop. Holkham Pottery ceased manufacture in September 2007.

This is a candle holder but they produced mugs, cups, lamps - all manner of items in a similar style.

Can anyone tell me more about this shallow dish I found recently? It’s just over an inch high and is 9 inches diameter. The barely-there paper label reads Robert Tarling of Kersey Pottery and there is an impressed logo on the side. I love the pattern; it has a 60s-70s feel to it.

Ok, so here are a few pieces from my Bishop & Stonier (BISTO) collection - a Staffordshire factory that definitely deserves more recognition. They started life in 1891 as the last partnership in a history of one factory, and eventually were bought out by the George Jones factory in the 1930s. Their success was mainly in exported domestic goods, but there is also a strong body of decorative works as evidenced by this early 20th century selection.

Tibor Reich (1916 - 1996) born in Hungary.

Tibor Reich designed a highly collectable black & white range for Denby in the 1950s. He's also famous for his designs in other fields such as textiles.

When I first became a professional dealer I sold this dish on eBay - I didn't know what it was then but it sold for a lot more than I was expecting so had a feeling it might be special! I now know that it was a 'Pusta' (star) dish from the Tigo Range and is the same shape as the 'T' he used ...

I have found out that it was in Fulham in the 1990s, designs by Maisie Seneshall, later cats seem to be painted by Mandy Short (signed either M Short of A (Amanda I presume) Short.

But that is it... anyone got anything to add?

Here is the first of my Seneshall cats.

Royal Venton Ware made by J Steventon & Sons from Burslem, Stoke on Trent. This fabulous glaze is known as Mutton Crackle glaze. The factory operated from 1897-1936.

Here's a website on the factory and here is a gallery of Mutton Crackle ware

Factory seems to have produced a funny range of stuff, some of it's quite ordinary and some rather nice

Can we have a thread for J Steventon & Sons under British please

Side view (but a bit dark)...

Lip detail

By George (or should I say Andrew), I think she's got it.

Better side view (maybe this summer I will spend some time learning how to really use my caneral)

Handle detail
