pip: thanks! what do the numbers mean? is there a database somewhere?

dan: thanks.."wicked" is exactly what i thought when i saw it! a rather evil looking piece..very cool.

i'm still amazed that i found all this info. On a whim i looked at my vase which has been on display on a shelf for several years, I checked the bottom (always thinking that W. Germa was someone's name!) , put "w,-germa pottery" into a search engine and voila!

of course now i want more!!

where should i start?

With West German pottery the numbers on the base usually relate to the form/shape no and the size so in this instance 7313-20 means that it's shape no 7313 and the 20 means it's 20cm tall.

I'm pleased that you want to start a collection but my initial thought is that you were very lucky to find such a good example from such a good West German factory,I imagine you will struggle to find that sort of quality in Canada on a regular basis.
We do have quite a few Canadian members here, perhaps they will see this thread and point you in the right direction but until then there's always ebay

Hi Andrew , nice vase , as Dan says ebay is your best bet for west german pottery, however carstens had branches in many different countries around the world so finding bits here and there at fairs , car boots , charity shops etc. might not be to hard , I think you are better off going for the higher end of the Wg collecting , nice thick glazes weird forms are more desirable than the usual run of the mill muted glazes of average form , look out for Roth , Scheurich , Carstens , Schaeffenacker , it has not reached a peak by any means yet , Telly will do that soon , no doubt, Ed

You're welcome! I'm going to split our discussion out of this main Carsten's research thread and put it in the Pottery Discussions area - we can continue there if wanted :-)

I have been collecting pottery for quite a while in Canada. Roth, Otto and Schaeffenacker never made it to Canada. I'm not sure about the US but they are all very rare here. THere are a lot of great examples of Scheurich , Carstens, and most of the larger companies.
