David Low

Post by Dajwid on Tue Feb 17, 2009 4:48 pm

I am not sure if these are prints or pencil drawings as they are framed and I don't want to spoil them by removing. The area around the drawing is umbossed.

They are signed Low

Are these worth anything ?

Any help would be really fantastic, Thanks in advance

Dajwid, you have to give people a chance. Not everyone comes in on a daily basis and the members are from around the world, so then we have timezones to deal with as well.

Give us all a week or two and someone will say something.

Hi, firstly welcome to the forum. As Carolyn has rightly said you have to give people time, sometimes it takes months for the right person to happen along here with the relevant information. If you want to know for sure whether these are prints or drawings you *will* need to remove them from the frames, there's absolutely no way of telling whilst they're under glass.

With regard to values, we don't usually value items, although of course this is something we leave to the individual members if it's something they're comfortable (and knowledgable enough) to do.

Lastly, please could you alter your profile to show your real location - it's helpful to be able to tell a where a member is and this can sometimes have relevance to the item/query being made.

They're by David Low, a New Zealander who worked a lot in the UK, for New Statesman. They're definitely later prints, as the originals will be in the New Statesman archives. His work has been much reproduced - and so value will likely be little beyond decorative.

I particularly like the Hilaire Belloc image - first published in New Statesman on 17 April 1926. I was a huge fan of his children's poetry when younger.

The other image is of James Louis Garvin, journalist and author, and was published on 15 May 1926.

Sorry if I was rather impatient

I like the pictures so they will still be sitting on my wall, but wanted to know more.
Many thanks for your help.

Now I can have a look around the forum a little more.

one way to test if you have a drawing is to try and rub it out

I'd be very wary of claims that one is an original Low drawing, especially from a local auction house, as these images are very well-recorded and the originals should be with either the estate of the artist or in the archives of New Statesman.

I would suggest contacting New Statesman to see if they do in fact retain the original drawings. It is possible that they've since been sold off, but it is more than a little odd, I think most would agree, that an original should turn up with a later print, identically framed and sized, both bearing the embossed pseudo-matting.
