Holmegaard 'Canada' glasses - what for?

Post by Pip on Tue Mar 24, 2009 3:45 pm

These Holmegaard 'Canada' glasses have a slightly unusual squatter shape to the bowl - does anyone know specifically what drink these were intended to be used for?

Hard to tell without sizes as there are two similar shapes with different purposes.

If they're quite big (the catalogue doesn't give dimensions - but rummaging through my notes, 11cm tall should be the correct size) it'll be '1/4ltr vandglas / 10oz tumbler', and smaller is 'cocktail'.

11cm sounds about right - does 'vandglas' mean 'tumbler'?

Given the shape, I would use them to serve lager.

I do not understand why signuficant number of people continue to call this pattern "Canada"?
It's actually "Scanada".
Those glasses look very much as Scanada, but I've never seen large vesion as those ones.

According to 20th century glass Kastrup-holmegaard glass denmark advert for decanter and three glass sizes Scanada also known as canada produced in 1955-90, so I would guess anything from whisky down .

Misty - we have a Holmegaard expert in our midst - Nic - one of our moderators and the owner of the website www.zeitgeist-i.com who reliably informed us that it's Canada (not Scanada).

No problem Misty - it's quite useful to bring this point up because other people might be wondering which is correct and, hopefully, this thread will help.

I saw Nic at Kempton yesterday and today I believe he's doing Camden Passage so I don't expect we'll see him on the forum for a day or so but I'm sure when he's back he'll want to contribute to the Canada/Scanada debate.

Think the information about the glass type given is correct they are water glass and tumbler glass.

As for the Canada/Scanada both is correct as big ed write, the series has been sold under the tradename Canada in some countries, also in Denmark but some other countries it has the trade name Scanada, but it is the same glass serie.

It do appeare in the Holmegaard catalogue from 1958-1965 and the serie is designed by Per Lütken in 1955-1990 and relanced for some of the glass types in 2007.

Yup, Peter's spot on - the trade catalogues and some advertising do refer to it under both names on the same page, but on all of the glasses I've had in original packaging, bought from America, UK, Denmark and Germany, it's always read 'Canada'. Not sure which countries used 'Scanada', but personally I would always refer to it by the former as this is the most common worldwide.
