Help to ID pottery
Can anyone help me ID this piece of pottery that a friend of mine has inherited please? (I'm in Nova Scotia). The elderly lady that owns it says it was given to her by an elderly gentleman who was an artist & did a lot of stained glass work in Europe (churches/cathedrals).
Apparantly he told her sister that it is very valuable! He died in 1972 aged 86ish...
Its 9.5" x 10" x 4" tall. I'm not sure if its European or American (or even asian!)
Looks hand thrown with a small lip on one edge, which has a small round hole in the middle so that liquid can pour through this lip - then there are 3 other similar sized small holes in a triangle shape (which were filled with `putty` that I removed for her! It also had paint on the external base that I also removed for her - good job I was trained in ceramic rest!!)
It is drip glazed in 2 areas with a wonderful red/pink/green& turquoise blue mix. then there are brown ethnic looking patterns on the inside & chineese lookng marks on the outside.

If anyone has any clue as to where I may start further investigations I'd be very grateful.
Many thanks
Lisa

Re: Help to ID pottery
The style is Japanese 'Karatsu' pottery specifically 'E-garatsu' (picture-karatsu) a style which was originally introduced to Japan from Korea. I thought this might be a sake pouring vessel (katakuchi) but the extra holes a large size might make that impractical...?
Somewhere to start from anyway.

Re: Help to ID pottery
Hi.
Looks like something from pre-1940s Japanese ware. If you haven't tried, please search carefully through out this bowl. It might even have tiny impressed mark of "Japan."
Good luck.
