Unknown pot Empty Unknown pot

Unmarked, just over 3.5" wide by 2.5" high. Any ideas?
Holes look too small for joss sticks, but that remains a possibility.
Might be for hat pins, but looks like modern contemporary studio pottery which would be the wrong generation for hat pins.
No hole in the bottom, and doesn't come apart in the middle, so can't be a pomander.

I came across a sealed closed clay pot with a handful of holes in the top today and the seller said it was a water pipe or something...wish I'd paid more attention. Could it be an ocarina?

No, not salt glaze.

The pattern and size of holes doesn't see right for an ocarina flute.

The bottom unglazed clay reminds me of Bernard Rook pottery.
It has to be British, doesn't it?

Shrugs

Not a water dropper, either.

Potters like Doug Fitch like to make copies of medieval pieces, so I'm wondering it that's what it is? Although what it is is still to be determined.

That's seems the most likely to me - a joss stick holder.

maybe the holes became partialy infilled with glaze if they're too small for joss sticks

or real original joss sticks were thinner than today's versions - like I was back in the 1970s!

Yes, it must be a joss stick holder. Now I just need to buy some 1970s joss sticks off ebay and see if they fit. Happy

hmmm, ohhhh Climber suggested water pipe.....this may be part of a Hookah pipe. A smoke or hookah shop might be able to tell you more about it.

It's an English thing. You are not going to explain that "joss sticks" means something ruder where you live are you? Cheeky
