I have 2 pieces by this maker & can't find out who the potter is, both in completely different styles, the monogram mark I think is either a fH or jH or vice versa depending how you look at it. The small pot/vase is 5.5cm high & 90g & the bowl is 28cm Diameter & weighs 1.48kg. Any ID help would be greatly appreciated.

The south heighton mark is a distinctive S within the H.
This mark is a lower case f (or a shepherd's crook) with a seriph, within the H,
very confusing, but definitely different. have a look at these posts here

Peter Fishley Holland, Jedburgh (FH mark) and after Empty Slipware Tankard, Mark JH - Peter Fishley Holland, Jedburgh, Scotland

Post by RoyJ99 October 14th 2016, 8:12 pm

Hi folks. Picked up this lovely slip trailed tankard today, impressed mark looks like JH or IH, reminds me of Joyce Haynes mark, wondering if it's a Scottish potter as I'm based close to Edinburgh and I've seen a few pieces with this mark over the last couple of years.

Thanks

Roy

An eBay seller listed one with the attribution and I asked if he was sure, and he said the family had bought it from the potter personally back in the 80s. I showed him another example (below) and he said definitely Peter’s work.
Did he move to France?  Maybe why he’s not in the Marks book

It's great to find an answer to this after so many examples all over the place.

I don't know whether he moved from the Borders but when the Marks book was first being produced a couple of short pieces in Ceramic Review were written to ask for people to send in their marks, whether they were professional potters or not. If you answered fine, you were included but, if you didn't see it or couldn't be bothered you didn't appear. I have met many potters over the years, who knew nothing about it and so were missed. Some had been added to subsequent editions.

Recently identified as Peter Fishley Holland, from the Finchley Holland family of potters, who moved away from the family’s pottery in Dunster and set up on his own.

A fine slipware bowl, about 11.5 inches in diameter, showing very strong influences from the potter's Devon ancestors.

Hi, I was researching this pottery mark "JH" or "FH" when I came across this forum, did anyone ever find the identity of the potter? I would be very grateful if somebody has the answer, as I have had no luck. Regards

Thank you for confirming the information in this thread, Peter, and for updating your whereabouts and for letting us know that you are still active.

I don't think there would be anything wrong with you adding a group photograph of the type of thing that you currently make, if you have something of that nature.
