Help me ID pottery marks - stoneware bowl with red and blue/green glaze
This is a medium size bowl 10 inches wide by 4 inches high. Anyone recognize the potter marks? or the glaze which is somewhat distinctive. By the way, anyone know what you would call the glaze on the bottom that 'crawls' on purpose?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Looks similar to a wax-resist, where there is a waxy layer applied before the glaze which means it doesn't stick to the surface. Maybe they lightly sprayed it on, or rubbed some of it off before applying the glaze, which is why some areas of glaze have stuck and not others.

ash glazes often give this effect but a bit more drippy

Good ideas on the glaze. Any ideas on the pottery marks?

Another thought - perhaps the glaze is a salt glaze.

I don't think so. Salt is thrown into the kiln during firing. You wouldn't get the separate top and bottom glaze effects shown on this bowl if it was salt glazed.

I am thinking that the two different glazes had different compositions and just responded differently to the salt. That might account for the mottling and odd spots in the red glaze.

This is an ash glaze, which I think is what you've got on the bottom of your bowl, possibly over a waxy or oily or oxide layer.

Looks more like a salt glaze to me. Check out:
Oh - the forum won't let me send the link because I'm a new member - maybe later.
Also found a picture of copper red salt glaze that looks like the red part of my bowl, but can't get the url for some reason.

I'm fairly sure Naomi's right about it not being a salt/soda glaze, but I can see why you would think that.

Walter Keeler's blue, salt glazed, stoneware has a similiar 'orange peel' glaze effect, but I still can't see how you'd achieve it on only half a pot.
