Islamic Charger Plate - Bombay School of Art Pottery Vase, India Empty Islamic Charger Plate - Bombay School of Art Pottery Vase, India

Found this today in a second hand yard and looking to find out some more about it. Marked to the base with what appears to be Arabic writing and shows significant signs of age in my opinion. Measures 31cm in diameter and is very heavy. Was thinking Turkish or North African?

Moroccan, possibly. It's similar to Turkish and Bulgarian slipware, but with the writing on the back it looks like it's from one of the North African countries.

Well just posed pictures on FB and a friend who spends a great deal of his time in the Himalayas doing biological research in the river systems, has sent me a message saying that he thinks the writing on this is actually Hindi or Nepalese script.

The writing is definitely Devanagari so it's likely to come from one of the northern regions of India.

I came across a vase today with a similar clay and floral decoration, that was described as:

Bombay School of Art Pottery Vase, Bombay, c.1880
glazed terracotta, polychrome slip and sgraffito decorated with chrysanthemums and lotuses, of amphora form, with four lug handles, inscribed in devanagari on the base
For a Bombay School of Art Pottery Vase of strikingly similar form in the Victoria and Albert Museum, see Rosemary Crill et al, Arts of India, London, 1990, p.225
