Worth noting that the snail bowl has Philip's personal seal as well as the Springfield mark.

Philip and Frannie Leach, Springfield Pottery Empty Springfield Pottery Teapot

Post by stardust* January 7th 2016, 4:33 pm

I just wanted to check that I'm right in ID this teapot as Springfield Pottery, and in the absence of a personal seal could it be said it is by Frannie or Philip Leach or did other potters produce work there?
Also, the glaze is quite crackled, would this affect it's value as a collectable pot?

I don't know of anyone else having worked there and I have visited on a number of occasions and know Philip and Frannie personally.

It is the Springfield mark and if you called it a "Leach" teapot that would be correct but perhaps a little misleading. Philip was the son of Michael, Bernard's youngest son.

The crazing would be a fairly common occurrence. it might make a little difference in what someone might pay but shouldn't put buyers of this type of pottery off completely.

Great advice, thank you. (still may keep it in my humble collection but seriously running out of shelves!)

To be precise, as it only has the Springfield Pottery mark, it is most likely made by Philip or his wife, Frannie. They have rarely had anyone else working there, from memory.

A 7 1/2 in octagonal plate, rather heavy for it's size, but nicely decorated
with Sunflowers.
