These two vases have never been positivley ID'd yet , even by the "experts" suggestions have been songden , roth carstens etc the WG on the base may have been a buying house in germany ? the base number is 200- 26 made in w. germany and WG in a diamond shape , great quality pieces

There's definitely something Songden-esque about them ...

These vases pictured are impressed , Sondgen vases are incised ,the roth vases of 300 series are moulded yet the chimney roth's are impressed and always labeless with no mention of w. germany, I would like to see more solid proof to validate what has been attributed to certain companies by people in the past , it's all very well saying this is a roth for example but no explanation as to why , I know it's confusing but surely we should strive to get it right and not take the word of a chosen few .

oh absolutely - I'm in total agreement with you - it's important we can get cast-iron attributions backed up by hard info or pictorial evidence. I was just musing about the fact that there's something Songden-esque about the glaze but I wasn't suggesting that's what they were.

I Know that pip , and I'm glad you agree that more research is needed, pictorial evidence or ex workers would be the ticket Happy

These look a little like a large vase i have seen attributed to Roth but that and these look like something else to me. Stop worrying me about the Roth labels Ed! This is something I keep in the back of my mind because i can't figure it out either. The 300 and also the 100 series all carry the labels and three figure numbers with thicker darker red clay. and yet the hole vases and all the rest have a lighter red clay with 4 numbers and no lables. I was thinking maybee the four figure numbers were later but this makes no sense as why would you stop using lables change all the glazes and forms at the same time. I'm (sure) they are all Roth. They have a feel about them. I'm sure i can tell a Roth vase even before i take the packing off. After all you were one of the first people that i know of to suss out the hole vases and all the rest of the four figure ones are obviously the same maker. My best guess is the three figure ones were the top of the range with more hand finishing and the four figure ones were poured clay which would explain the slightly thinner clay and uniform shape. Your right Ed we can't know for sure as there is lott's we don't know yet. Thats what makes it interesting. Ex workers is a great idea. a lot of the four figure Roth have letters underneath and the people who put them there are the people to ask. how do we find them? I took your advice Pip . I've got the beer out so i better get posting my Roth before Ed tells me I Sad have a house full of scheurich.
