Sandland Ware (England)

Lancaster & Sandland (Hanley, Staffs) manufactured the 'Sandland Ware' range of pottery from 1944 until the 1970s. This is probably my favourite of their many designs, the striking black and white 'Zebrette' range from the 1950s. Items from this range are very highly collectable and fetching big sums.

I adore Zebrette ware! This Sandland Ware vase isn't quite so spectacular, but I'd love to know more about it if possible:

It is 4 1/2 inches (11.5 cm) tall, and approximately 3¼ inches (8.3 cm) in diameter at the base. The shape is what you might call 'restrained' freeform - its quite subtly modelled.

Sandland Ware was made by Lancaster & Sandland of the Dresden Works, Hanley, Staffs between 1944 and 1968. The mark on your piece isn't in Godden so I think it must be after 1961.

i have this tile encased in a metal frame and its a coloured picture of the pope pius pp xii, i cant find anything out about it, is it a picture or a trivitt etc.

Trying to think as a good Catholic, I imagine that you are more likely to stick a momento of a Pope on the wall rather than slap a teapot on his effigy. Unless you had been so good that you needed something trivial to confess that is.

Pius XII was Pope from 1939 to 1958 so that dates it but a picture might help to narrow that down.

i was just saying i dont know what it is actually used for, a trivett was just suggestion, yes he was pope until 1958 but Sandland ware made there pottery etc from 1944 until the 70s, so i think these dates would be more accurate.
i would have thought it would have had something on the back of it to enable wall hanging. i will email a pic as i cant seem to upload it here.

I realise that it was a suggestion but the only reasons for a metal frame that I can think of are so that it could be used as a trivet or for helping to display (by hanging).

This mark isn't in the Godden book but the earliest use of the term "Sandland Ware" I can find is 1949.

This pope seems to have been quite popular at that time as he was credited with helping the Jews in WW2 (although later he was said to be Hitler's pope so who knows). A date of c. 1950 seems reasonable.

I agree this would have been for wall hanging. You see similar plates from time to time.

Your starting price on eBay may be a little optimistic as the plates sell for £4 or £5.

lol thanks for the info, well i will start high then drop down when i dont have any interest, i sold a ashtray once for £5 not knowing they are usually sold on average about £50, so now i dont take any chances as i have never got over that.

Hey all... have been collecting Zebrette for a number of years, although has gotten trickier with fewer pieces showing up on eBay these days.

Just wondering if there is a good online resource with details of the full range of pieces? I don’t know if Lancaster & Sandland ever printed a catalogue or advertising material back in the day, but a scanned copy would be ideal if such a thing was available.

Thanks... started with a small rectangular pin dish I found in a local op shop for $2 and grew from there! The Hornsea Elegance (and most other non-Zebrette bits pictured) were bundled with Zebrette pieces I bought on eBay.

Hi, I am wondering if you could help me with some information about these Cups and Triangular Plates. The plates have a map of Bermuda on them and the cups have a large ship with sails on them. Both are trimmed with gold. They were purchased many years ago by my Grandmother during one of her many travels. I am trying to find out the age of these as well as the value. They will be passed down to my daughter/son in the future and I'd like to be able to give them as much information about them as I can.

It may be by someone who has hand-decorated a blank dish, a not uncommon practise.

As an aside, Sandland did supply blanks to other potteries like Gray's, who then
overstamped the Sandland mark with their own.

Beautiful Collection I had never seen this Design until my friend gave me a Plate to sell for her which is the Zebrette design so I started researching it. Such a quirky design I can understand why you love it. Looking online there only seems to be a few items.
Ionly have one plate and looks like you have lots of plates but if I ever come across anymore items of Sandland Ware Zebrette Pattern I will let you know.
