The design is a bit Stig Lindberg Carnival but in my view much better, freer and more spontaneous, like picasso....maybe its one of his? Big Laughter Any ideas would be valued.

Excellent. I mostly have British pottery. This is the only piece like this I have. Is it possible to say who made it and when?

Wow! I would have sworn this stuff was Italian... but apparently it is Mexican. There is a piece on ebay (US) item number 160410260569. It is signed "Talavera El Carmen". Check it out.

Curiously, the pictures on the website show nothing even remotely resembling the pieces with the lumpy white glaze and the modernist cartoony figures (I have a small bowl with a fish). The pieces shown on the website have such a classical almost Renaissance look to them that I'm not yet convinced that these pieces are from that place.

Well, actually, you apparently get one listing with that, but if you click "visit seller's store", under "kitchenware, dishes on page 5, she has 7 pieces like this listed and refers to them as Mexican (?).

No idea where she gets the Mexican idea from, Talavera is definitely in Spain (at least it is on my map).

Ok , I have found out there is , or was a Talavera Pottery in Pueblo Mexico , ( majolica) however there is also a Talavera Pottery in Spain that uses a technique of Italian & Spanish mix , which would be more in keeping with this style imo.

Talavera is a well known type of Mexican pottery that is only produced in certain regions due to the specific type of clay deposits in the area. The style originated in Talavera de la Reina, Spain and then traveled to the Americas with colonial Spaniards. It has been a tradition in Mexico since the 16th century. Curiously, the pieces in question bear no resemblance to typical Talavera pottery. IMHO, these items look more like 1960's Italian stuff--go figure.... Shrugs Insane
