I just purchased a lovely jar with lid at an auction near Boston. It is < 6" high (without the lid) by 5" wide. I know nothing about pottery, I liked this piece for the intricate workmanship and geometric/ordered decoration. When I received it, I discovered a little 'rattle' of some kind placed by the potter within the lid. I imagine this is done on purpose? It is marked underneath with what may be initials: KA?? I looked through a book on American marks, but they are mostly much older and I couldn't find anything. I am not sure the piece is American anyway. I would love to know more about the maker, especially if they are still in business. Thank you in advance for any help!

Wow! These are very similar styles. I wonder how you could make "MW" out of that mark? I didn't see Michael Wisner's mark on the website, but I will contact him. I love his pieces. Michael Wisner's jars are often noted as 'cremation urns' which makes me wonder about mine, which I took to be an objet d'art. (I read about someone who bought a pot at a decorator store, got it home, found it a little dusty inside and whilst cleaning discovered the funeral home sticker on the bottom with the name of the deceased. Being excessively frugal, the dead woman's family had returned the jar to the store when they had scattered the ashes.)

Thank you for the suggestion! Just checked . . . my jar is clean inside, plus seems a tad small, especially with the room taken up by the pointed lid!

P.S. I just thought to search online for Michael Wisner's mark. I found two pots and a platter that don't show the mark, but indicate that the pieces are signed and dated, which makes me think he did not make my jar. I will still ask him how he marks his pieces as the resemblance to my little jar is striking. Thank you again.

whilst i don't think yours is by Michael Wisner, the technique is similar. I think he has been influenced by native American and Mexican potters???? perhaps yours is a modern interpretation of native American/mexican pottery too?

Although the pot is wonderful, the decoration doesn't seem precise enough to be a Wisner. I agree with bistoboy that it's probably modern Native American in origin - some of the stuff coming out of Mexico and the Pueblos is wonderful.

Solved! Michael Wisner very kindly identified the jar as being a piece by Kenneth Standhardt of Eugene, Oregon. A quick Google search has confirmed. I don't see his mark imaged, but I see an almost identical jar for sale as well as similar clay, glazes and lids. His website indicates a strong influence from Native American pottery. Thank you for all of your help!
