Scandi vases with bubbles in the base headache Aseda10

This seems to be a vexing topic. I have a source who says that the one on the left is probably Aseda, and the one in the middle might well be by Wirkkala (different thicknesses of glass). The one on the right is odd because the glass is not of consistent thickness all the way round, and that makes me nervous. I've had a suggestion that Magnor also did this kind of thing. Anyone shed any light on the isssue?

Although there's a lot of Polish glass with bubbles in the base, I think in this case the first two are Holmgaard

100% not Holmegaard, sorry.

I would say that most, if not all, of these types of vases with the open bubbles and the cut/polished rims are fairly new Polish glass, as seen in Asda/Tesco.

So what would the rims look like on, say Aseda vases?

I don't know of these vase being from Aseda, but all the Aseda I've ever seen/owned has been fire-polished (smooth/rounded).

Not that I'm an expert on Aseda glass! (Holmegaard, though, I can discount with certainty)

I think you might be right. I've just dug out a vase that I know for sure is a Bo Borgstrom design (again with bubble, but with a waisted shape) and although the rim is still quite flat (as opposed to the very rounded rims on, say, the bamboo vases) it's smoother and more polished than those on the above examples.

This bubble in the base glass is everywhere, M&S have been selling it for twenty years or more. I see lots of candlesticks and also straight sided cylinder vases like these, many are from Poland.

Aseda produced plenty of designs with bubbles in the base, none that I can find are cylinder vases, they produced some of the designs with a bubble and also without. Here is one Aseda shape:

Many glassworks have used an air bubble in the base. The open bubble cylinder vase may have started with Iittala and Tapio Wirrkala:

If you find one it will be signed and the quality will be superb.

I was sure I'd found a catalogue entry for Holmegaard, but must have been wrong.

Hi John

Thanks for that - the Aseda example you gave is the one I've got, so that's good. The rest, I guess, are destined for the car boot!

Without a signature on base rim you are almost certainly looking at a piece less than 10 years old from any number of UK High St outlets - joFish's reply is on the money.

Ooops, not Holmgaard, I meant Iittala.

Probably not Iittala, but if you scroll down to Taylor Thomas's amethyst vase in the link below, you'll see the similarities:
