Rosenthal Netter (Italy) Empty Raymor/Rosenthal Netter (230/5 Italy)

Post by wyvern June 3rd 2008, 3:46 am

Hi there

I've just joined your forum. There's so much great information here!

I wondered if anyone could ID this pottery vase. It stands 14.5 cm tall, and has an old label underneath that reads "230/5 Made in Italy"

Thanks :)
Wyvern

Hi Wyvern - welcome to the forum. Your vase is brilliant - I love it - it's reminding me of some Raymor/Rosenthal Netter pieces I've seen somewhere. I'll see if I can find anything in any of my books or online resources to compare and get back.

Ok now there's a bit of a grey area here regarding Raymor and Rosenthal Netter so perhaps I should clarify - and maybe Ed might want to add any info he knows to this as well.

As I understand it Raymor and Rosenthal Netter were both importers to the USA of Italian ceramics from companies such as Bitossi and others. However, Rosenthal Netter also commissioned pieces especially - so I'd say looking at your vase, taking into consideration the style and colours used, it's most likely a Rosenthal Netter piece - either bought by them and imported into the USA or commissioned especially and then imported. It's extremely difficult (apart from Bitossi pieces which are so distinctive) to be able to pin these down to an actual factory. Hope that helps.

aha - I said 'imported into' Cheeky

Thanks for the confirmation though Ed - there's quite a bit of confusion out there generally about the various companies making and dealing in Italian pottery.

Thank you for your comments everyone, and to Pip for fixing the photos in this thread.

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the signed Raymor pieces, such as http://cgi.ebay.com/Raymor-Italian-Art-Pottery-Tray-Mid-Century-SIGNED_W0QQitemZ290287829227QQcmdZViewItemQQssPageNameZRSS:B:SRCH:US:101.

Never seen anything like that before... I wonder what the grooves on the sides are for? Is it an ashtray?

I think raymor and rosenthal netter bidded against each other for Italian pieces and a piece is just as likely to have a R/Netter label as Raymor one , I don't why this one is signed raymor , maybe they did that as well as labels , ED

Yes, it's an ashtray. I wondered if it was contemporary, although the listing states 80's. I've seen a couple of other similarly signed pieces for sale.

The seller says he picked it up in the 80s - not that he thinks it's from that era. I don't think it's contemporary at all - it looks very late 50s/early 60s to me going by the shape and the design.

We get a lot of Italian pottery here and I'm particularly keen on these sorts of 50s 60s styles. We don't tend to find Raymor as such, because as you know Raymor commissioned pieces purely for the American market but the Italian pottery from that era that we get here is obviously from the same sources - more usually just handsigned 'Italy' and sometimes with a number.

Rosenthal Netter (Italy) Empty Rosenthal Netter / age? what is it?

Post by mabernichjr July 30th 2010, 5:43 am

Rosenthal Netter (Italy) Netter10
Rosenthal Netter (Italy) Netter11

I think this was a decoritive table lighter stand? or mayb just a vase? Any idea on age or what the numbers on bottom mean? I am completely clueless on this item and/or pottery in general.

The diameter is about 2 inches and it is 7 inches tall.

Why is the bottom marked from a 5 to a 10? What do the numbers mean/ any info would be great.

Thanks- MIke

nice piece , I would say from the 1960's, the first number is usually the form or shape number of the piece , the second the size or in this case a series of number instead of size , IE. 1,23, etc. don't know why someone has written over it though .

Rosenthal Netter were US importers. The vase will have been made by one of the Italian potteries, maybe Bitossi. The number might just be the importer's stock code.

It's signed Italy. Possibly 1960s in date +/-10yrs.
Without a manufactrer's mark it's very difficult to tell which company made it, but it's worth looking up Raymor, a wholesaler who supplied Italian pieces (including Bitossi) to retailers in the USA and Europe back then.

Also check out Rosenthal Netter. It's similar to some of their stripy pots, which you'll find on Google images.
