I couldn'r resist this little gem for £8.00
it will need some restoration on a chip but a good project for when I retire

a nice early example of this shape and at 11cm tall it's slightly smaller than those made later

have you seen the Wilkinsons advert from the twenties showing Clarice Cliff (assumed to be) in the art studio surrounded by the lastest wares before Bizarre.

I met up with a chap whose father worked at Woods as manager in the thirties and he told me that John Butler was hounded out of Wilkinsons by Cliff. I also think that the times had changed-this was similar to the experience of Daisy Makeing Jones at Wedgwood-she was sacked after the Wall Street Crash but didnt leave for another year. She ordered one of her helpers to smash eveything!

I know she worked on Oriflamme production covering imperfections with fish and insect images,she obviously progressed to a position of power later on

I have an image of the advert-very interesting but unable to send-dont quite know how to-can anyone help?

9 inch tall Oriflamme mallet shaped vase in the Oriflamme decor.
Produced around 1910 at the Royal Staffordshire Pottery

Its Wilkinson....but how old and what do we think it is

going by the japanese lady with a fan, i'd guesstimate 1880s aesthetic period, but i guess the mark will give a clearer indication.  It looks like a fairly standard cauldron shape spill vase from that period - many factories made similar. How big is it though?

found this record of a Clarice Cliff cauldron selling at Bonhams, so i guess yours is the same basic model and is later than aesthetic period. 1920s? there was yet another revival of oriental patterns at this time.

The Cauldron shape was available in two sizes....yours is the smaller version. The pattern is a lithograph print and was first available about 1925 in black and had an orange lustre applied over the top, the blue version to the my best knowledge was first made in 1928ish  and was still available in 1932.
 
In response to an earlier post about Ambeston ware being an earlier version of an Oriflamme is incorrect, Ambeston tended to be a creamy yellow inside and Oriflamme painted green inside. When fully marked they both have the same patent number, registered in 1911 the patent was shared between Colley Shorter and John Butler the same year an Oriflamme vase won it's first trade show award at Ghent and the Ambeston name was dropped.
 John Butler was known as Jack Butler when he moved to Woods in 1930.

Hi Dan, I previously posted a pic of a gold dragon....see page 4 of this thread.

The one mentioned in the old pattern book from 1921-5 "fantastic bird and dragon, painted by Fred Ridgeway and gilding by Clarice Cliff" is on a 17" charger has still not turned up....It is possibly in the vaults of the Wedgwood museum, they have a 4ft vase in Tibetan that rarely sees the light of day!! Or on the wall of a well to do family, a 6" Oriflamme vase with fish on was acquired by another collector a few years ago with a 19/6 price tag.
In 1922 Clarice Cliff had her clay modellers indenture signed off and was working in John Butler's studio, she was on what was considered a good wage of £2 a week, so half her weeks wage would secure the vase!!

a lovely large vase 9.5 inches tall and a less common colour which completes my Oriflamme display cabinet perfectly

this Oriflamme vase has a less common colourway which really suits the peanut form
