Orlak Glass (Chance Bros / Glass) Empty Orlak Glass (Chance Bros / Glass)

Post by poolejake Mon Feb 18, 2013 8:47 pm

Can anyone help me. Recently a piece of Orlak pressed glass came into my possession that was designed by Harold Stabler of Poole Pottery fame. Orlak was made in the 1930's and although not art glass but functional tableware made by the firm Chance Bros. This is an early form of Pyrex so some of you may be aware of this maker. I would welcome any further details on this topic/maker

Might be worth posting the question on the glassmessages.com forum. Looking up Orlak glass it seems it was made by Chance Glass.
There's a book on the subject = Chance Expressions: The History of Domestic Glassware from Chance Brothers, 2nd Editions, which you might be able to order via your library.

The author of that (David Encill) is a member here. I'll put 'Chance' in your title incase it attracts his attention Happy

Joblings took over manufacture of the Orlak range from Chance Bros in 1934, 2 years before Stabler designed a set of streamline casseroles in 1936.

The impressed C.206 (last photo) is what identifies it. However, I only have access to three catalogues (for which years is not shown) and this number is not listed - not the first piece I've encountered where this happens.

According to the data I have, then C.203 is an Octagonal 7ozs Individual Soup Pot and the numbering simply meant that the higher it was, the bigger the item. No mention of it being lidded, though. So could I trouble you to measure the capacity of this, please?

Sometimes it would appear that the usage of an item did change, and not all items feature in all three catalogues. All will be revealed in Chance Additions, which will catalogue the contents of all three catalogues.

The pot holds 12 fluid ounces. It was designed to hold the lid as it fits onto the pot in a proper manner. The pot was given to me by Richard Dennis, I wanted to find out more about this glass as it was designed by Harold Stabler who went on to be part of Carter Stabler and Adams (Poole Pottery) so I would appreciate all the info you could give me
