Arabia - Fennia

Hi, I have a piece of Arabia Made in Finland, I don't know alot about it just what I found on the Makers Mark page, From the Id's on the bottom it is from 1900-1917 but that all I know, there are other marks on the botton that I don't know about. I have found photos and info on later pieces 30's and 50's  but not much on the early 1900's. Is there a book published for Arabia peices? I will post photos of it as soon as I get them uploaded to computer.

I found the site you mentioned, but as you say it only gives a 1900-1917 date for the mark. I suspect the other marks are the pattern number and the designers initials. Until 1916 it was owned by Rorstrand, employing Swedish designers, so it may be worth asking them:

Only other vase I've been able to find with this writing (1900-1917), and marks is on ebay. And selling at 499.00 dollars! So just wanted to make sure what it is. the lettering on it DM IP 38 and 128.

 No problem Clara, probably no-one can comment on that valuation but members may well be able to tell you more.

There is the price sellers ask, and the price that buyers are willing to pay. Best to look at completed listings to see if the seller has achieved that price, or if they've over valued the item so it has remained unsold, sometimes over several relistings.

Yes, it has 1 bid on it at 499.00, even with a couple chips on it... I sent a email to the museum link that you posted. So maybe find out something there. Thanks for the link :)

Naomi is correct that the factory was opened by Rorstrand and the first director of operations there was Gustav Herlitz, who joined the factory from Rorstrand and became managing director in 1893. Two Swedish designers were employed to improve the range of wares at this time, namely Thure Oberg and Jac Ahrenberg. That was all the information I was able to find for this period and I think that designer details might be difficult to come by.

Despite the Ebay bid that you mention, I have no reason to believe that Arabia pottery from this early period has any significant value.

It does appear that items from Arabia's 'Fennia' range (Art Nouveau 1900-1917) command high prices. I wonder if this is the same range.

I have found one with the same decoration as yours, but different shape. Google "Arabia, Vas, Lönnlöv, Fennia". I'll send you the link.

Art Nouveau or Jugendstil shapes and patterns by Arabia from this period do have interest to collectors of that genre but the shape of the vase here is plain and the pattern is not stylised enough to my mind.

On reflection I might have been a little harsh, as it might appeal to someone who couldn't afford the better pieces.

Well looking around, undamaged pieces seem to be commanding £1000-£2000. Presumably it's one of those things that appeals to the American market.

The last Fennia piece on ebay sold for $908. I was the buyer. Your piece is considered Fennia, but a variant that usually has maple leaves (sometimes called design 100).  The 128 is the model or form number, DM is the mass or material code, 38 is the year and month = August 1903, IP is a code over which there is confusion as to what it represents (some think it is an inspector or the painter of the vase). Design 100 is in at least 10 or so other background colors.  Your green example is the most often seen.  Prices vary from a few hundred for mugs and small pieces to over $1000 for larger pieces.  Condition and scarcity of the piece has an influence.  Typically ebay has 3 to 5 or so pieces a year.  These are generally seen only in the US as they were made for export and not sold at the time in Finland.  A lot of pieces go back to Finland. I am always in the market for these pieces.

Thanks for that information. I can't ever recall seeing any of it here in the UK so most may have been exported to the States.
