Any information please on this small dish 13.5 cms diameter. I think that the mark suggests early 60s. Wondering about pattern and designer etc. The colour is actually much more vibrant than it appears in the photos. All thoughs appreciated

these are the least rare of all 1960's Poole studio, I think the glaze decoration was thought up by Guy Sydenham and Tony Morris but I read about them many years ago so can't be certain.
they came in 3 or 4 sizes and were made in great numbers so they remain the cheapest vintage Poole studio on the market

I think the glaze was called sea crest, but I could be wrong.

yes they used the glaze on tableware later on and called it sea crest

I have a similar dish, with the earlier TV Studio mark.

i did see the top one for sale at a antique fair and they were asking £325 for it. the bloke knew nothing about it apart from it being a poole studio plate. think the bottom one was for sale in a auction somewhere when i was on holiday and sold pretty cheaply if i remember correctly.

The top one came from James Miles on ebay a month or two ago, while the bottom one was via the Saleroom - just 60 quid, plus commission. It cost more than that to get it here.

Here's a shape 92 bowl with an unusual Poole mark.

My guess is it's from 1966, which is when I believe this shape was introduced.

That's a very nice, subtle finish, Dan. It looks like a wax-resist piece.

I have a couple of similar 5-inch dishes with the earlier TV mark (That Studio mark is 1964-66) ...

It's a little over 8 inches wide and made from a very dark clay.

yes it is the right thread Potty, the plate was part of the Delphis range but the black clay was very rare and was usually reserved for Guy Sydenham.

I'm just not convinced on this one Dan. Yes the colours are delphis glazes, but it
was never done in stoneware. No shape number, and the wrong mark.
Is the plate thrown or moulded? The back of the plate appears to have been
sprayed with the same Ice Green glaze used on the "Olympus" pieces.
I would put it down to a one-off or a trial piece myself.
Or there's an outside chance it just could be Atlantis.

To be honest it's very hard to tell, looking up-close at the back there does appear to be very faint hints of throwing lines. (well not throwing lines as such, but the faint lines you see after a potter has used one of those bendy comb-like tools to remove throwing lines)

Going by the weight, base and rim, I'd be inclined to think thrown by a good factory thrower, but I can't be sure. Doh!

I have a similar plate. Mine has the paintress's mark and it's from 1966, and I guess yours is too, as the red glaze looks the same.

These plates crop up from time to time. I have always understood they date from the late 1960's and were part of Guy Sydenham's Studio output (or maybe by the people he trained) and sold at the factory. You sometimes see vases, pebbles and other one off items in black clay, some with similar Delphis glazes.
Guy found these items very hard to sell and eventually came up with the Atlantis range, which was similar in concept but organised around defined shapes and options which were attractive to trade buyers.

Here's a photo of mine. The back seems to have the same glaze and the mark belongs to Carol Holden, who worked at Poole between 1966 and 1969. I believe this is her earlier mark.

I used to also have a small bowl made from black clay that was decorated by Jean Millership, who worked at Poole the same time as Carol Holden.

Below are four choices for the design of the 8" card to promote the upcoming exhibition I'm arranging here in Taiwan.

All looked really good, but in the end I opted for the bottom one. The Chinese font was changed to a more stylish one - it's not a direct translation of 'Cool and Collected' as that phrase would just get lost.

The two areas of 'pottery' will be glossy, while the pink-red area and text will be matt.

If anyone would like to get a card, just PM me with an address and once they're printed up I'll pop one in the post.

That's great to have a signed one CD, it puts a firm time-frame on these pieces.
