I have a large ball vase with this distinct 'Trade Mark' stamp, but nothing came up when I googled.
Does anyone know the maker? Thanks Pete

I've never been convinced it's a spinning wheel. If you look carefully it looks as
though someone is turning the big spoked wheel, which is connected via belt and
pulleys to a table which looks like a potters wheel, with a worker throwing a pot.
It would be more appropriate for a pottery mark.

Everyone calls it the "Spinning wheel" mark however, this one is more typical
with the full name included.
John Spencer who had designed for the Langley Mill pottery before the war, continued
at Pearsons in the 1950s. this 10 in example is typical of his sgraffito style.

Compare it to the Langley example here.

Pearsons of Chesterfield Empty Nina Watson

Post by denbydump July 10th 2015, 12:24 am

I don't have much info on Pearsons, but one designer was Nina Watson.
I have seen cottages and ashtrays with animals on, usually signed.

My little pot is rather plain, but a typical Pearsons shape.

A small vase with studio style brushwork. Sadly the mark is not well impressed.

Pearsons of Chesterfield Empty Pearsons Pottery of Chesterfield

Post by labshaw July 22nd 2019, 1:05 pm

Hi all

I wondered if anyone on here was into Pearsons Pottery (of Chesterfield)

I've come across what I think is quite an unusual piece as i understood Pearsons only really made jugs, bowls, vases and other crockry items.

The bottom of the cottage reads; "Anne Hathaway's Cottage (cant quite work out the next bit) marked Pearsons of Chesterfield Nina Watson.

Any clues would be appreciated, I can't find anything similar anywhere. I know my late grandmother lived on the same road where the Pearsons Pottery place was so this may be how she came to owning this.

Kind regards

Seems the Company was in operation for a long time, originally making stoneware bottles and tableware. These cottages seem to have been made towards the end of it's life, possibly after the employee buyout in the 1990s. The company ceased trading in 1996.

Quite a late piece from their 175th anniversary year, this is a one-pint tankard made to commemorate the 1985 Chesterfield marathon. Pearsons was possibly the marathon's main sponsor that year, likely as part of its' own anniversary events. Quite a sombre looking piece, all black with gilt decoration.

A nice John Spencer vase from the 1950s, with unusual black accents in the design.

Quite an old Pearsons vase, early 20thC. at a guess, almost 10" high and 6 1/2" across the top. Hand carved decoration.

The mark was introduced C1880 according to Godden's, But looking at the fitting, your Lamp base would be 1930s. I  would leave it as it is but don't even think of wiring it up with that ancient fitting!

Picked this up today in a charity shop for £1.50, cheap for Pearson's Sgraffito. 8" diameter, 200mm.The mark is a new one on me! I have seen dozens of sgraffito pieces but never with the pre-war mark, and never signed by John Spencer! Any thoughts from the experts?? Any idea of age?Pearsons of Chesterfield P1150112

Wow, nice pick up Pete! Never seen a Spencer monogram on any Langley Mill or
Pearsons. It will be from the 1950s

I've searched the net and can't find another example of his signature on any of the other sgraffito items. They all have the usual 50's "Pearson's of Chesterfield" potter's wheel mark. Could it have been for a show/exhibition or something?

I Googled the two names and found a "Cagney and Lacey" mug for sale. Typical Pearson's mug, same mark. I have lived within half a mile of the pottery for most of my life and remember it closing. Everything for sale but at the time it was mostly stew pots and the like, nothing decorative.
