Holmegaard - Otto Brauer Gulvase Empty Huge Holmegaard Gulvase

Post by vanmann March 4th 2015, 6:15 pm

I have this huge amber vase which looks like a Gulvase but I am not convinced. To my (inexperienced) eye the ratio between neck and main body did not look the right proportions. I thought the neck looked a bit short.

Overall height 50 cms
Main body height 30 cms
Neck 20 cms
Diameter at rim 14.5 cms
Diameter at base 20 cms

AS always all thoughts much appreciated, John

Looks fine - the height/proportion of any given gulvvase (two Vs) can be fairly variable.

The largest Gul vases are not Gul vases but another company from the 1970's. Just can't remember whom at the moment. You can see a set of them in the background of the film 'The Bruce Lee Story' as they went up to about 70/80 cm and nearly always orange.

I remember seeing this on TV years ago and brought it up with a dealer over lunch and it was he that said the Gulv's only went to a certain height and after that they were another 'influenced' company that made them. I looked around recently and people are accepting 50cm as the upper range for Holmegaard but it seems that all the various period and later (modern) vases are all being mixed in together under the one banner.

The Otto Brauer Gulvvase was always available in 5 sizes, the largest of which is 52cm.

The two in your screengrab look like standard 52cm and 46cm sizes, the smaller being in a coral/opal colourway.

Where any confusion might be arising is that the 25cm size was reproduced (probably under licence) in the mid-70s by a UK firm called Cascade glass, in original Kastrup colours (cobalt, dark green and this amber-brown colour), as well as a couple of odd'ns (bright blue, grey and grey-brown).

Mine is the same height and has a worn Holmegaard label. It weighs 578g. Maybe the double glass ones weighed more?

I believe they were produced from 1965.

Holmegaard - Otto Brauer Gulvase Empty Holmegaard

This Danish glass company was founded in 1823 in the former municipality of Holmegaard, just outside Næstved.

The company is perhaps most famous for the designs of the Danish glassmaker, Per Lütken, who worked for the company from 1942 until his death in 1998.

The Kastrup Gulvase was not designed by Lütken but by Otto Brauer. It comes in many sizes and colours.

In the 1990s Scandinavian ceramics and glass was something that I dealt in but this is the only thing that I kept and have on display.

Here is the remains of the original paper label - they never had an incised mark on the base.

So better late than never............... an image of the concave base with distinct flat rim around the edge. There's scratching on the flat rim that the photograph doesn't show.
