Not Denby, nor probably Upchurch. The teapot shape is very distinctive thoiugh.

D’oh, I was hoping you’d know it instantly, Denby Doh!
As you say, the teapot is very distinctive, but also I thought the jug had a Bourne Denby shape

Yes it does, Denby and Langley, among others, used this shape of jug from late
19thC, Denby still use it today.

The collar on the spout of the teapot is odd, maybe a giveaway.

Is that a plate in the set? Can we see top and bottom?

*embarrassed face* I didn’t buy it; I was just curious about the maker so although I looked at everything I didn’t photograph the 2 plates. But the back was exactly like the saucer. And a deep inset rim on the teapot lid.

The jug had a wiped bottom. The photo came out very yellow under the artificial lights so I’ve made it paler in editing but it’s beiger in real life.
And a side view of the sugar bowl

Children's tea sets were sold almost entirely in Toy shops, they were a completely different market from proper pottery.

Lots about it, the shapes, suggest early 20thC, but the teapot itself suggests studio.

I’m sure it’s Upchurch. It’s just the teapot that’s confusing me.

It is certainly an Art pottery type of glaze, Devonmoor/Candy ware/Saunders etc,
but I seem to remember Upchurch/Claverdon doesn't normally have foot-rims,
nether does Candy ware.

But surely the question is, why would a small studio/art pottery make a child's teaset? If it wasn't a special commission there would have been precious little profit in it!

Well it’s thrown, so, yes, labour intensive and not cheap. Don’t know how much it would have sold for originally but the pottery probably had a few wealthy customers happy to pay the higher amount.

Obviously a story behind it we will never know. Children Play with teasets! They get chipped, cracked and broken reasonably quickly. That is why as toys, they were nearly always cheap and cheerful. This one is a different kettle of fish altogether. Nice quality. If we only knew the story....
