Carved head which was once mounted on a larger piece, maybe an item of furniture.
Not sure of the country of origin. I’m guessing Spain or Portugal. I think it’s a dog’s head, along with hair and feathers on the ‘helmet’. Maybe an 18thC sailor or trader?

do you think it may have been carved from reclaimed wood? I'm thinking maritime, sailor made, folk art

I’m thinking Maritime too, but I don’t think it’s reclaimed wood, although I don’t know what the wood is. It’s too light to be oak. Poplar, maybe. It’s been carved with a notch front and back, and holes through the sides for a wooden dowel. So made to fit on something.

Maybe a decorative feature from outside a building or shop?
He’s certainly got an 18th C look about him.

Might it be a seal or a dolphin rather than a dog - bit more nautical/ maritime?
