Troyan slipware, Bulgaria Empty Troyan Slipware Pottery, Bulgaria

Post by Dannd Sat Sep 07, 2013 3:08 am

Hello!

I bought this vase from a woman that said she received them from a Swiss estate unfortunately I'm not familiar with Swiss mid-century pottery. It looks quite unique so hopefully someone out there has some clue to the maker & confirmation of the origin. I thought the glaze was stunning. What type of clay would this be made from? Its quite red. Thank you for your time!

Traditional slipware/folkware pottery, made for the tourist trade. Nice quality so might be Thun, Switzerland, but this style is more commonly seen in Bulgarian Troyan Pottery.

Naomi,

After looking at examples of Bulgarian Troyan pottery I think you're dead on with that classification. I see some similarities with Thun but much more with the Bulgarian counterpart. She must have been remarking on the origin of the second vase I purchased from her (VSK USC which is a mid-century Swiss mark) - I assumed she was talking about both. Do you know how long they have been producing this style? I see a lot of 90s-modern examples. Thank you so much for your help!

I believe the style is a traditional one, going back to the 19th Century or beyond, but pieces are far more numerous now since they started making them for export from the late 20th Century.

As for age, very difficult to tell. It's traditional folkware, so made for well over a century and still being made today for tourists and export. But most of the stuff in the UK is post-WW2

Troyan slipware, Bulgaria Empty 1950s? Terracotta pedestal dish frilled edge - Troyan Slipware

Post by Lego Mon Mar 04, 2019 8:44 pm

Hi,

Am I right in thinking this is terracotta, probably from the 1950s and southern European?

Does anyone know what this style of decoration is called?

There is a good weight to it and looks thrown to me.

thanks

Thank you! Looks like production of Troyan is still going strong so I could be way off with the date. Seen it described as redware so was wrong about terracotta. Seems lots of it about, mostly functional for cooking etc. I had a feeling the style of decoration was familiar. Thanks again

From what I can find, redware is a kind of terracotta, but not all terracotta is redware. So you weren't wrong.

Troyan slipware, Bulgaria Empty Blue Slipware Mug without Mark / Signature - Troyan Pottery, Bulgaria

Post by logboy Sun Feb 23, 2020 2:53 pm

First post.

This was sat in one of my local charity shops, and I think there's something about it. Can't decide if it's good amateur or flawed larger-scale production by an independent maker.

Colours are very reminiscent of mocha ware (blue, brown, black white), but design is obviously more recent to my eyes; feathered / dripped, perhaps. Vintage rather than antique, I guess. Nicely done, clean and simple design with effective execution. Great shape and size; scale is decent and accurate for good usability - not too big at all (about half pint?), certainly not small enough to suggest coffee. Slight errors with some treatment of the glazing, when removing from wheel (blue scraped across base) and applying handle (some minor brown over main body) but so nice too look at, i think.

Not marked on base, no stamp or signature. Not hanging on this being valuable bargain, but rather just interested to see if it turns out to be by anyone in particular.

Any help appreciated.

It's Troyan slipware from Bulgaria. A lot of it around; they seem to have stuck with the same small number of designs for decades, which are based on old folkware patterns.

Still being made, and has been made in quantity since the 60s at least, so impossible to date.

Can anyone identify this brown glazed vase for me?
It was purchased second hand in Cornwall and I saw an identical one, but pale blue, in Sussex recently.
It’s 10x4 inches.
The label on the bottom maybe a red herring?
