Pieter Groeneveldt (Netherlands) Empty Holland stoneware vase - Pieter Groeneveldt

Post by postmodernnut February 25th 2011, 4:25 pm

Trying to get a handle on our ceramic collection, and found this piece.  It stands 9.25 inches tall and 4 1/8 inches in diameter.  Stamped in to base Made in Holland, cannot decipher the center part, and incised 4/23.  Any help on who this maker is will be greatly appreciated.  I apologize for the fuzziness in the second image, I just cannot get the camera to focus sharply on it, due to its depth.
Thanks
Jack

Hi there,

It's a vase made by the factory of Pieter Groeneveldt in Voorschoten, the Netherlands. This is called the tree bark glaze, he also made lave glaze and oxenblood glaze. I think these vases are made in the fifties or sixties. Unfortunately the mark is used from 1923 unto 1972, after that, the factory stopped and Groeneveldt made unique vases. In his work you see influences from Asia. Groeneveldt also painted and wrote poetry.

Regards,

Arjen

Hi,
Inherited from my mother this vase is 6.25 inches high, 4.5 inches wide and 2.75 inches deep. The glaze finish reminds me of the bubbled sugar topping on creme brulee! The marks on the base are 'MADE IN ENGLAND' in a crescent shape with the letter 'P' at the top. There may be some marks below the 'P' but I cannot make these out. There is also a hand written number 921. Any help with ID would be much appreciated. Many thanks, TPM.

Welcome to the Forum TPM and thank you for posting what to me seems a most unusual pot.

I know that you have called this a "studio vase" but the marks suggest to me that it is a factory made item rather than a studio piece but the red terracotta clay would make it unlikely to have been made in the Potteries.

I think that the letters (word) that starts under the P is going to be the key. Any possible idea of any of the letters?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I have looked at the mark from all angles and used an eye glass to pick up any further details. There would appear to be two small square boxes to the right of the downward leg of the 'P' although the bottom box has the left hand side missing. It almost looks like a reversed P with a line across the bottom?

I didn't bother to look at that bit as you said it was England - a lesson for me as well!
