Decanters? Empty Decanters?

Post by 22 Crawford St. Sun Feb 20, 2022 11:50 am

So I'm going to add decanters to the 'completely out of fashion' list along with long case clocks.

I know why they were used = as in the past (distant past) wine would have a lot more sediment but most people would today think why are you putting that nice wine into that dirty old xxxx.

Does anyone ever use a decanter?

Sorry - there is the label thing also. If you decant a bottle of whiskey or wine then it becomes anonymous, if a guest askes about it then you have to get the bottle out of the bin, looks like you are hiding something. Would you drink beer out of a anonymous clear bottle?

As for being actually used, no, but as for design yes.
Georgian/ Victiorian ones are out of fashion now, despite them being well made
cut crytstal etc.
Many 20thC glass designers made fantastic decanters, now collectable as classics.

I have a couple of these:

I like decanters and have a few, but now they're pretty much unsalable, even Georgian ones, there doesn't seem much point in collecting them.

They are the "salt pigs" of the glass world....... except some are quite pleasant to look at.

Agreed most plain glass Georgian or Victorian decanters are not wanted these days apart from filling with coloured liquids and placing on a bathroom sill but there is still a good market for examples from Liberty and co, W M F, guild of handicrafts etc also silver mounted claret jugs. It's also not wise to fill old decanters with alcohol due the high lead content in some of the the glass.

I have to say fireplaces, if the cost of electric/gas doubles or trebles then good old coal (and logs) will look like a valid alternative almost overnight. Fireplaces could make a big comeback. No longer jut for Sunday afternoon whilst the roast is cooking and Zulu is on the TV
