The heights of these two figurine are ca. 19 cm and ca. 20 cm. The carving is rough, but not without character. The male figurine, holding an axe, has on both sides of the pedestal an inscription that seems to read CHACON. The pedestal of the female figurine, who carries woodblocks, appears to have a name on one side, I believe it says R. GARCIA. Not visible on the photographs here, but the bottom is chiseled flat. Does anyone perhaps have more information on this kind of colored carved figurines or perhaps even about the carver?

I assume they are from central or south America, these figures would originally have been carved at home by poor people who needed to make a few Pesos more to pay the bills but the later ones were probably made on a larger scale for the tourist market

Pacomio Chacon was a wood carver born in 1916 at La Mesa del Poleo near Coyote, New Mexico.
Possibly worth investigating

Thank you, dantheman. While the story of Pacomio Chacon is interesting, I don't think it has a relation to these pieces. A South or Central American descent might make more sense, but I found them in a Dutch thrift store and at first glance I thought they had a Black Forest, Germany appeal – perhaps they are Iberian.

I had a set of carved wooden bottle stoppers which I think were Northern Italy
