Thanks for the link s Naomi and Crawford, A lovely story. I ever realised quite how close his friendship with Geoffrey Whiting was. No doubt there is going to be some mazing items in that sale. Any idea who made that large dish he is holding  in the photo? Looks somewhat like Mary Wondrausch's work.

I’m not finding an attribution for the plate. Maybe the same person who made the replica Ozzy Owl for him. Possibilities include John Hudson, Carole Glover, Irma Starr and Ed Dawes

He's 94 (b. 1928) and a very jovial chap - he must know everyone! Who's going to ignore Henry Sandon knocking at your door.

Far better to pass on 95% of what you have whilst you can make sure it's catalogued properly than someone screws up the sale after you are gone and also much easer for your family.

When you get older possessions can be a burden not a relief.

Mary Wondrausch was of a similar age grouping to him. They might well have been friends.

Yes that plate is wonderful but a little bit painting by numbers, prefer when someone has to paint 100 in a day and just slops the slip on fast and loose. Some end up crap and some are really magical and spontaneous.

Going back a few posts...

Long a ago I saw a programme on India. Men in their forties/fifties, with house paid for children all grown up and married off, ask to leave and they just walk away. gone. They go and live on the banks of the Ganges in some town. Sleep on the steps by the river. Do casual work for money to eat. They lead a very simple life. No possessions and no responsibilities.

But they consider themselves extremely rich and very lucky to be living and dying beside the sacred river. Washing each day in it.

We all take possessions too seriously.

You are being very philosophical Crawford. While an admirable thought, it goes completely against the grain of normal human nature. Throughout human history the rich and powerful have always judged their status by the quality and the kudos that their possessions give them.

Just viewed the Henry Sandon collection at Chorley's auctions , as expected a lot of very ordinary mid range ware which reflects Henry Sandon's broad taste in everything ceramic ,the early English wares in particular were very average with no real gems.

Just like a lot of us, he kept too much! Although equally, he might well have kept back the more valuable pieces that went more to him.

I met Henry a few times and he enthused over a piece of ceramic most of us found quite ordinary, i once had a discussion with him about an early slipware mug on my stand.He is one of the old school and doesn't care too much about a bit of damage, i believe he sold his main collection years ago this being his second.

He was 95 when he died on Xmas day. There is a rather nice obituaryin the Times this morning.There is a quote of his there which probably rings for true all potaholics,
            ‘I’ve got to come and live with you’, like a puppy in a pet shop, and once I’ve bought a pot I never part with it. Occasionally, if I feel guilty about a purchase, I leave it in the boot of the car and smuggle it in when Barbara’s out of the house.”

RIP Henry Sandon!
