Any idea of the date these mugs were produced for Poole? I’ve seen ones made by another manufacturer but those appear to be modern re-issues.

Poole label. Tbh it’s a cheese dome which are notorious for being unstamped and unmarked by potters . I was surprised to find Alan’s mark.
Edited to say: the label fell off when I washed it and as expected (because it’s a cheese dome) there’s no stamp underneath

Would be grateful for some info on this lidded trinket box. I know it is part of the Odyssey range but would like to know when it was made , who designed it ( Anita Harris?) and if there is a way of knowing who decorated it . TIA

Picking your brain again! I have searched on line to confirm it is the Odyessy design as is written on the label, however I'm thinking it may be Peacock?

I thought so too but they are very similar designs and it's a tiny pot

Looks like peacock to me, also Odyssey pattern used a much darker red. Don't always believe labels as the person tasked with putting barcode stickers on the back may not have been able to differentiate and ultimately the size determined price.

Cheers, i wasn’t sure, but I’ve since found he’s currently designing new patterns. I’ve moved it to the 1980-present thread

Poole Pottery 1980 to present day - Page 10 Empty Poole query

Post by RonaldKeith January 9th 2020, 8:26 pm

So I purchased a little job lot today because it had a couple of things that I quite liked, ie some vintage blanc de chine Royal Worcester and similar.  In amongst them were two other pieces marked as Poole.  However these are porcelain and not pottery and I am a bit curious about them.  I am inclined to think they may have spurious marks but I would like some thoughts. Everything else in the box was old ie, no later than 1920's.

The shell, due to its shape has a tremendous ring when flicked with a fingernail, the duck is in good order as well.  I think someone stuck a somewhat optimistic sticker saying c.1921 on the shell.  The mark on the duck is just Poole England in plain script

I love the clever design, it's meant for use on ships so you don't spill your drink

The decoy duck was originally produced in stoneware but in the '80's they produced a range in bone china - recognisable by their gold eyes and special backstamp. I think they then produced some in cheaper earthenware with a std Poole backstamp which is what you probably have. The shell looks to be of the same period, it is certainly not '30's or '50's. They did produce white bone china variants of shells in the '80's - H&A p158 but they usually had transfer prints of flowers on them. The backstamp on the shell looks to be '70's or later as it is stamped with black ink. Remember that not everything is in H&A so it could be an '80's era shell.

The shell does not look right to me. I have never seen that shape and the backstamp looks too dark, thick and misshapen.

You could be right but the glaze looks ok and identical ( as far as one can tell from a photo ) to that on the duck. One thing we can be sure of, its not 1921.

No I was certain it was not 1921, in my original post I said that the previous owner put a somewhat optimistic sticker on. They are porcelain and feel modern but I was stumped by them as I had not seen the like, certainly not in porcelain.

Thank you for this - do you know when Cosmic was in production? (I believe around 2000?)

Does anyone recognise the paintress' mark in the pic below? It doesn't seem to be one of the well-known ones, and without a copy of Hayward & Atterbury I've reached a dead end.

Going back to the 'Cosmic' pattern vase, the paintress mark looks like Dawn Polden. Cosmic was one of the early 'living glaze' patterns and was discontinued c.2001 - probably when they went into administration for the first time. Upto around 2001 the bases of vases were white with printed backstamps whilst all later vases had moulded bases that incorporated 'poole' and the dolphin.

Cosmic was introduced in 2000 and was quite short lived. I don't have an exact date but it was not in the 2004 catalogue. The paintress mark is for Dawn Polden.
