Zip - grab everything you see online with Evernote (PC/iPhone/Android) - it's free! Photos can be so useful and if you have a smartphone then you can check them out on the move or from the pc.

Originally from ebay. Bought as Ambleside. It has a cheesecloth fabric like texture on the reverse. Otherwise unmarked.

I think it must be right, that pie-crust edge is typical, along with the back,
like my dishes here,

Nice bit, wonder why it's not marked?

Looks like it had an old label stuck to it. Maybe clay was too dry to sign.

But still some doubt? Again it a probable but not 100%er.

TY for the replies.. I'll live in hope of someone finding something similar that's marked.

Ambleside Pottery - Page 2 Empty Re: Ambleside Pottery

Post by 22 Crawford St. Fri Jan 01, 2016 6:51 pm

It's very quiet round here so I'll post my favorite piece from last years collecting. It's quite a humble pot by George Cook / Ambleside. Not the normal type of stark decoration this one relies on form and texture alone with a flick or two of brush (finger?) decoration. It's very tactile and easy to pick up with a very slim neck and the rough banded body.

Unusually it holds my attention more that I thought it would and it's changed my opinion of 'country' pottery.

There are remnants of  wasps inside which adds to the charm, it's probably lain discarded in some loft or shed for many a year.

The last photos demonstrate the best way of base taking base photos. Hold under a table lamp (IMO)

1) Use lots of light = fast shutter speed = crips photos, not fuzzy
2) Oblique side light brings out the marks

Yes dd I love the suprise when something new comes along. It's only 270mm though.

BTW should not Ambleside be in British Pottery not studio. I define studio as having a good chance of being made by the person who's name in on the pottery?

Are they decorated by the potters or someone other than the potters?

I'd leave it under Studio, but it's one of those that fit in both.

Else we would have to change a lot of others as well, inclucing Leach Excellent

OK understood. Most of Naomi's teabowls are Studio. The individual potter making things by him(her)self, lots of communication and commissions with people (they have to be friendly). Ambleside, Briglin, Leach.....95% British (Factory) Ceramics IMO

If they were like Poole Pottery where you largely had the potters separate from the decorators then it could be moved to British but if it falls into both camps then since the pieces look like Studio I think they can stay in studio
