This is a heavy earthenware vase with a metallic matt grey glaze. It has white (with tiny bubbles), pink and blue colours in stripes around the base. It is 8 inches tall. On the base is the same white bubble glaze that is around the bottom and a red painted signature that is very difficult to read. It looks similar to the early 20th century art vases with high temperature crystalline glazes, like Ruskin, Bernard Moore or Reginald Wells but obviously doesn't have the marks.

I have been obsessing about it for a week now and need help. Can anyone suggest what it is?

Many thanks

Guy

Hi, thanks for replying. It definitely feels heavy and kind of satisfying to pick up. I'm not sure how to tell porcelain from earthenware or stoneware but the unglazed parts are quite darkly coloured maybe with age or dirt and feel coarse to the touch.

the rim of the base looks scored to give a rough surface that has collected dirt but the inner bit seems to be the same material but smooth. I may be completely wrong

Thanks, it may be porcelain. Does that get me nearer to identifying it? Does the Pottery museum in staffordshire still do appraisals by post?
