Cottees Poole Pottery Auction - Page 2 Empty Re: Cottees Poole Pottery Auction

Post by ppcollectables May 3rd 2014, 9:17 pm

The thing with Poole is that it continually innovated and changed so that although the 'traditional ' range continued throughout the decades, other styles and designs were introduced that were very different. Twintone started in the 30's, freeform and contemporary in the 50's, the 60's saw a new studio range which became delphis - which also varied considerably between early delphis and late delphis - then there was Atlantis, aegean, stoneware animals and I guess you can add Living Glaze to the mix. Consequently ranges tend to go in and out of fashion, at the moment 50's is very fashionable and good pieces sell for a lot of money, stoneware animals were the vogue but now less so thus prices have dropped. The same with delphis in that it has been very collectable but has now become less so - maybe all those who wanted pieces have now bought enough. Therefore less people put their delphis into auction because they know it will not make as much as it might have a few years ago. Of course, quality pieces from whatever range will always be collectable. What makes something more collectable is difficult to say, collect what you like as Poole offers something for everyone. At the moment art deco and 50's are very trendy periods so that affects what people buy as well. Hope this helps.

ppcollectables, TY for the reply. All understood. Yes some of the estimates seem low for the GS pieces. Methinks we will have to wait a little while for those stoneware animals to come back up.

I just had a quick browse through the catalogue and in my opinion it's the worst for quite some time Sad

Not much for the Delphis / Studio collector but some middling-good '30's stuff and a few pieces of Atlantis / Karen Brown to look at. I'll be there anyway!

Not very impressive at all this time round ... distinct lack of studio pieces although there are a few nice Atlantis items ...

It all depends on what your favourite period is. People have said to me that they think there is a good selection - but they are more interested in the 20's and 30's pieces. No real 'top notch' lots except for the Gazelle vase, lot 370. We'll be going as usual as we always stop for a few days nearby ( rspb reserve, the best pub in the south of england nearby etc. ). I live near Camberley and would be willing to collect any items that anyone has purchased on line which can then be picked up from me.

I have been holding back from buying Poole pottery on ebay saving my money for the upcoming Gene Thompson auction but I just looked through all the lots advertised on The-Saleroom and can only assume the best pieces were sold privately Sad

It could be Dan although I have no idea what else might have been in the collection. I certainly see enough good pieces and whilst the early tiles and the 1920's and 30's animal type stuff is not for me there are a lot of collectors who are happy to pay good money for what are rare items. I've got my eye on a no. of other pieces.
As I will be there on the day and later at Peterborough I could arrange to collect any items that have been won and bring them up to P'boro in Oct.
