Post by VeryGreennkeen May 10th 2011, 10:44 pm

Hello to all you learned Potty people,
i have recently developed an interest in pottery and have a few peices that im stumped with ID ing.
Any ideas or advice on there origins greatly appreciated.
Many thanks from Scott, verygreennkeen

This Unusual Angular Studio pot caught my eye at a local bootfair, has a speckled greenish blue glaze, almost looks like an old salt glaze method.
possibly inscribed "Bob 135" ?

Hi Scott,
what you think is the B for Bob may be the potter's mark and the rest would be just a record of other info? I think a clearer pic of the B may help with the id

Is there a particular country likely to use crank clay, ive suspected this was American for no particular reason other than a gut feel

no it's used for sculptural pieces as it stays firm while you work it and doesn't shrink much but it isn't a pointer to any particular country.
The 135 was stamped into the base in a very un-British manner though

Well that makes sense as it has more of a sculptural feel rather than standard vase. I wonder if it may be a recognisable sculptors mark ?? ever the optomist !!

I know exactly what u mean dan, its been bugging me for almost a couple of years now. Its so distinctive that i thought someone would have had an idea.
I guess its probably just another one lost in the passing of time.

My thought is continental too, but not a pot or markings I've come across before.

Think I've seen pots by Bob Parks marked just with the name Bob. He has potted over a long period in many different styles, but even if this isn't by him, it might be worth emailing him just in case he knows who else puts Bob on their pots.

He was formerly at Culloden Pottery but google says he is now at Appleby-in-Westmoreland, Cumbria.

Looks like "B 03 135" to me, so I would be inclined to think it was made in 2003, seems to fit with the sort of age I would expect this to be.

Just for a moment i saw one of these in a book and got all excited...

though perhaps it could have been that i had found the prototype
but seems the range was designed by Frank Ferrell around 1928 so couldnt tie it in to the BoB monogram at all.... oh well .. back to the drawing board.

I think it looks like 2 letters combined, too. If I tilt it a bit left I'm seeing a 'h'. JH or even TH rather than a B.
