Hi all,

I think this dish could be by Rosie Farr, the mark is very close as is the description of her work, but I have never actually seen any of her work to compare.

The other potter that comes to mind and has done similar work (though the work I have seen has had a different body and pottery marks) is Richard Freeman.

Any opinions on this please?

Thanks,

Potty.

I don't know Rosie Farr's work but I see that she only started potting in 1988 and from your images your dish looks older. Is that a reasonable assumption?

I think I have a Richard Freeman dish of a similar shape to yours - I'll try and dig it out, as I think that it might be him.

That was easier than I thought. The mark on the back of my similar shaped dish, which appears to have the same clay body and a tin glaze with a different pattern is the same seal as on yours. It even has the dot coming in from the edge after the F.

So it is Richard Freeman. The reason that I can be so certain is that mine has BATH POTTERY impressed as well.

Studio Pottery Long Baguette Dish, Stamped RF. 847164 But why is it a Bagette dish please? Is there such a thing? Would there be one per person?

I have no idea, but I've seen those shapes described a cucumber dishes - which seems to make more sense?

Is it just the shape, not the use?

Shrugs Nutters then! They must've had very big tables for one dish, one baguette. What about a second baguette?

Where's the room for a side salad? Happy

There are a few names for dishes this shape as I understand it, Baguette Dish is the one I went with and yes for serving a Baguette Happy

I would say it's a dish rather than a plate, the sides are a fair bit deeper than they appear in the picture.

Sad But what about the cucumber dish I suggested? - that's what they call glass ones sometimes.

Or I'm using them for the wrong thing?

That would be one of "a few names for dishes this shape".

A phrase I like is "same difference" Excellent

At 18 inches long I just thought Baguette Dish suits it better Happy

I don't imagine many people in Britain in the 1950s had heard of a baguette - that's why it's a Bath Pottery Loofer Dish!

There is nothing I like more than to rest my loofer on a dish while having a bath.

What is the point of having a dish that you don't use - you sound like one of these collectors.

I can honestly say that I have never found the need to take a cucumber with me when having a bath but I can't speak for everyone. Cheeky

Big Laughter No no, please don't take that as a suggestion!

I was thinking more of a picnic type table thing - definitely no cucumbers in the bathroom Naughty
