Tall Andrew Hague cylinder vase.
13.5" high

Potter's stamp = H for Hague, and ^ between the arms of the H for Andrew, and a dot between the legs of the H.
Pottery stamp below. Looks like an 'R', or lowercase 'a', or combination of the two, for Askrigg.

Andrew Hague, Askrigg Pottery. Empty id help please 3 pieces, AP mark - Andrew Hague, Askrigg Pottery

Post by vanmann February 5th 2013, 8:16 pm

Any thoughts please on ID of these 3 pieces bought today. All have same mark which appears to be a conjoined AP. I know that several potters used a similar mark but this appears to have dot between the legs of the A, which I hoped may distinguish it.

I got these two mugs from Andrew when I first moved to Yorkshire in the mid-1990s. Bit dull imho. 8.3cm (height)

I didn't realise at the time that he trained with Marianne de Trey at Shinner's Bridge but this lidded pot of his I bought recently off ebay seems a much nicer item and I can see how she influenced him. 7.8cm (height).

Andrew Hague, Askrigg Pottery. Empty vase marked with conjoined AP - Andrew Hague, Askrigg Pottery

Post by vanmann October 14th 2013, 6:32 pm

Ithought that this may have been Abington Pottery but now realise mark is wrong being impressed rather than incised or painted. Also there appears to be a definite dot betwen legs of A. All suggestions appreciated John

Have found it now Askrigg Pottery. Some pieces I have seen from here are marked with AH conjoined so presumably these pieces are actually made by Andrew Hague and the ones marked with AP made by someone else at same pottery

I've seen both marks on Askrigg Pottery, and seen the AP mark wrongly attributed to other potters.
I don't know why there are two, but it would make sense if he had assistants/students helping him.

It looks to be a faithful copy of a real pair of seedpods, so I think that excludes naturalistic potters like Rooke and Wallwork who are a bit more interpretive.
