Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One

Thanks PP I will do a bit of further reading on her and the range in general as there seems to be a fair amount to take in with regards to who and what is the the most desirable etc. As to the value I payed £14 so I kind of got it right.

Here's some studio vases that I've picked up recently

A Shape 9 vase with a wax resist pattern (1962-64 TV stamp)




A Shape 33 vase, again with a wax resist decoration (1962-64 TV stamp)




A Shape 62 vase with the 1964-66 stamp

Following up an earlier discussion on the relative values of different Atlantis pieces, here are a couple of photos to show how the quality of the carving declined from when the range was introduced to when it was withdrawn.

First, here is a photo of two early pieces by Beatrice Bolton from 1972. The one on the left is shape A5/2 and stands 4.5in high. As you can see the carving and glazing is very high quality - there are over 500 individual carved lines on the body of the vase.

Even more impressive is the smaller A2/1 vase which is just over 3 inches tall. The pattern on this vase is highly intricate, being made up of over 600 individually carved marks - a huge number for something so small.



The second photo is a picture of a later A9/1 vase carved by Jennie Haigh around 1975/6. You can see that the intricacy and quality of the carving is just not of the same order as the earlier pieces due to the pressure on staff to meet quotas increased.

My latest purchase is a rare item from the early studio period (1962-1964) a very unusual colourway and design sets it apart from other pieces of this period,

does anybody know this paintress mark?

my latest ebay bargain is this superb Aegean dish,it was decorated By Jane Brewer using silhouette and sgraffito techniques

Good buy. I did look at that but I already have a similar one, although I did pay quite a bit more for it

Popped back to the shop today and took some pictures. Not quite how I remember it, but still nice n'chunky.

It's been one of those days today. Trawled round half a dozen charity shops and found sod all. On the way back home I popped into the one up the road and found this Delphis bowl (27cm diameter):



Is the monogram AF for Andree Fontana?

no it's Rosina St Clayre (1971 - 1973)

Out and about in London today and bought this nice Agean piece - not marked to back, well with a dash so I suppose no way of telling the decorator.

Ever since I came across Poole pottery on my internet travels a few years ago I wanted a piece for my collection, but thought impossible to find here in central Europe (not a single piece on German ebay atm among the thousands of vintage ceramics from all over the world offered there)
I was wrong

I have bought a few of these mermaid design trays over the years but the colour way on this one is my favorite,designed for the Spring collection in 1964

Looked the mark up I think it's Patricia Wells 1959-73

Correct. The dish itself will be 1966 - 1969 which is when these glaze colours were used. The blue looks to have come out nicely; it often burnt to black. Nice find.

Got married on Saturday :)
