Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One

Here's a couple of Poole vases that are one-off Guy Sydenham pieces from the 1960s.

The first is just under 4 inches high and 6 inches wide and is very unusual in being a swirl vase where three different coloured clays are combined when the vase is thrown to give the swirled pattern (there is no glaze to the outside of the vase)





The second is a large 9 inch vase in black clay with a yellow glaze that is speckled with a red glaze.

Just bought a shape 81 dish with orange and red and lots of black swirls - not signed by painter to back.

the black colour was caused by over firing

Technically Dan its caused by overglazing of the blue glaze.  Carol Cutler told me it was by far the hardest glaze to get right, to little and it didnt fire and too much and it went black, like this.  The line between to little/right amount/to much was so fine you see it as black all the time....

But more interesting was Ally Pally fair today, where I picked up this stunning 8 inch plate for a rather nice bargain price of £120 :)

It has fired so well and is such an intricate design, just love it :)

Great display Ian! Love the one with the leaf shape pattern, last picture far right. Don't think I've seen that one before.

Pity - I was looking forward to it.

Quite a good selection of traditional this time though. I see there's another valuation day on Monday so hopefully more to come.

The lack of studio type stuff is more than made up for by a very good range of quality traditional pieces which have been rather lacking in recent sales. Look on ebay etc and it is always quality traditional pieces that sell well because good shapes and patterns are getting harder to find. If Cottees don't get studio etc coming in then they can't sell them. The point is that some people like 60's stuff and some like 30's. Maybe there isn't much 60's stuff because no one wants to sell any but would rather keep it. I think there was a large collection of traditional entered - some was in the April sale. Personally all those 30's pots in lovely abstract art deco patterns more than makes up for a lack of later studio pieces.

for me the Jefferson/Sydenham studio revolution took Poole pottery to another level where talent and inspiration flourished

The thing with Poole is that there is something for everyone - 1930's, 1950's, studio, atlantis, stoneware. Compare a big 30's pot in a very complex design to some Clarice Cliff and then you'll see just how underated Poole is. But then we probably know that already. I'm not sure if there will be bargains but it depends on what you want and how much you want it.

I didn't intend to collect shape 49 pin dishes but they have just built up over the years

A very early large non-standard shape by Guy Sydenham and Beatrice Bolton. It's like an A5/2 but almost 6 inches tall by 6 inch wide and is beside a A2/1 for size comparison.

In terms of quality, this is a beauty

my only buy from peterborough. also got a studio pin dish from a local auction which i will pick up and post later this week

I have a couple of Angela Wyburgh Poole Zone tile panels that have finally come out of storage:

Poole Zone is no longer active. Roger gave up the retail space in the quay outlet a couple of years ago and the company is now dormant.

It is yes - not the TV studio mark but the next one along chronologically. One of the only blue 49er's I have where the blue has fired extremely well ...

This is the infamous Ruth Pavely TV-mark studio 49er which has all the characteristics of being a Tony Morris piece - love the thick glaze.
