I would just like to make aware to anyone that's interested that a new website has been launched.....  'Troika Pottery Collectors Club'

The owner Andy has involved a professional company who we feel have done a great job.
As I mentioned before it's an ongoing process due to hopefully
collectors registering and then uploading photos of their pieces.
We will then 'verify' the piece/s due to fakes on the market and they will then be added.

The flash books are well worth a look, especially the Julian Greenwood Penny sketchbook which shows his thoughts/ideas and designs for some of
Troika pieces.

Troika was the very first thing that got me interested in studio pottery. Back is 1993, loking at an ART auction in Lay's Penzance. They also had a ceramics auction on view with a mixture of studio pottery and Troika. I was transfixed, at both the studio and Troika, Didn't get any of the Troika, but got some Studio, and that set me on the path of collecting studio.
Anyways, I clearly remember the estimate for a bog standard Coffin vase was £60-£80. I left a couple of bids mid range, and did not get any! Now, 26 years later, estimates for a similar coffin vase are £40-£60..... Does popularity actually have any reflection on prices? Or is the old adage. Go for the rare and unusual. That is what keeps or increases in value?

Funny you should say that regards David Lay as I too, whilst on holiday in Cornwall, previewed an auction there back in 2003 (from memory) and saw Troika pottery for the first time!
I decided to look into it when I got back and collect the rare pieces when my budget allowed etc.
I think yes, popularity certainly does effect prices but if you can afford it in my opinion, it's far better to go for the rare & unusual rather than quantity.

I have this double base in my collection, l was interested to know how unique it was in having ‘troika’ spelt out in the design as seen on the head of this vase?

Tin-mine lampbase by Jane Fitzgerald (1977-83).
Always thought they were well-modelled, and look good as a stand alone,
rather as the intended lamp.

Some St. Ives and Newlyn white bits.

The Tin Mine lamp base has good colours and the black & white pieces just hark back to the 60's/70's and will always compliment any minimalist setting.
Iv'e never owned any of the mugs but they have always had a disinctive look!

The Troika club seems to be taking itself very seriously indeed. Registration, Authentification, special serial numbers,.....Cripes!
Their mission statement is interesting, Quote

Yes, I appreciate where you are coming from but it's not as 'formal' as it maybe first appears!

The website is basically setting out to be a database of all the designs and quantities that were produced over the 20 odd years they were in existence.
The reason the serial number stickers are supplied after authentification is that there are quite a few fakes out there plus there is the added confusion of Fosters pottery, see link below.

Iv'e been involved with the website regards text etc and we hope it will grow regards Troika pottery images being uploaded to it.....but only time will tell whether we have succeeded in that respect.

It sounds very laudable, and an excellent resource. indeedy But. One can see it on the dodgy Ebay descriptions now.

Yes, you have a good point regards Ebay etc but the serial numbers will only ever match up with a genuine piece on our site.
Anybody trying to sell a 'dodgy' piece even if they managed to get the same stickers wouldn't succeed in passing it off as genuine if the number was checked on the site as it wouldn't be in our database.
Note I said...... 'pass it off'..... as obviously it could still be sold to someone who hasn't checked the serial number against the database.
Obviously there will always be pieces that slip through the net and the system will never be 100% watertight.
All we are trying to do is minimise the 'dodgy' sales,  log the Troika pottery that's out there and at the same time provide an excellent Troika Pottery reference site.
You have raised a good point so perhaps we should adjust the wording on the site to reflect your concerns and therefore I'll contact the owner this week to look into it.

Is it a perfume bottle and also the writing on the base says Troika, England?
Should it say St ives.

It is a recorded Newlyn mark 1970-83.
I'm not sure if they continued making scent bottles at Newlyn,
but the base is very small, and it's hand-written, so maybe ran
out of space.
